DIY teepee!!

 Before I was even expecting Max I fell in love with the canvas teepees that you can see floating around Pinterest. I had visions of reading books with my little ones and playing imaginatively while being enclosed in our own special space. So needless to say, I could not wait to make one for Max, and our future kiddio(s). Since Max absolutely loves books (they are probably his most favourite thing) I thought he would enjoy having a special space in our living room to look through them. I also did this because our main floor is not entirely baby proof, so this way he has a safe spot to have fun.

This is the teepee I made for Max. I must say, I'm pretty darn proud of myself for taking this on.  Our living room does not always look like this. This was Christmas morning for Max. You see, the teepee was actually from Santa. Along with a popper, a new table and chair set and a Melissa and Doug construction puzzle.

There are so many different ways to make one. You can use different materials for the frame, you can sew your cover, or in my case if you are not a sewer, you can hot glue gun the hell out of it :) For mine, I used six, 1x2x8 pieces of spruce from home depot. Many people use pine, but spruce was cheaper and the sweet older man helping me told me it would not make a difference if I used the cheaper wood. I then had him cut a foot off each piece. You can leave the wood the full eight feet, but I choose to cut some height off because I did not want the teepee to be super tall. I then bought a 9x12 tarp, also from home depot and a spool of twine. 

Now comes time for the most challenging part. Which wasn't really crazy challenging at all. You drill a hole in each piece of wood about a foot down. You then feed the twine through each piece of wood. I had my dad who was down visiting help me shape how I wanted the frame to look. It is best to have an extra set of hands for this part. I pretty much put even spacing between all six pieces, except for the space I would be using as the door. I left the space between those two pieces larger.

side note- You have to build the teepee on carpet. When I brought the frame to a space that had hardwood flooring, prior to securing the tarp, the frame slid outwards. Carpet holds the frame in the shape you want, while you secure the tarp. After it is secure you can transfer it to a space that has hardwood flooring.

I then draped the tarp around the teepee. With the ends being at the opening of the teepee, I used two finishing nails to secure the tarp in place at the top of the teepee. The first cut I made was around the bottom, cutting off all of the access. The twelve feet was not enough to cover the last two sections of the frame beside the openings, so I used some extra fabric I had from Max's nursery curtains, to secure two side panels on either side of the doorway. I hope you can see what I mean by looking at the picture of the finished product. This worked out for the best, because it gave the teepee a pop of colour.

I then used many many large glue sticks, to hot glue the canvas onto the wood frame. I started at the back and glued from the top down, pushing hard on the fabric and holding my hand over top of the each freshly glued section to ensure the canvas would stick. Since the canvas has some weight to it, it would slide down a bit if it was not held in place. I made sure while gluing that the fabric between sections was pulled tight, so I would not have loose fabric closing in on the inside of the teepee.  I wanted the teepee to be taut, not billowy. When I glued the fabric to the canvas I folded a seam over  so the seam showing would not be frayed. I was unsure how this would look with using hot glue, if the glue would show, but it didn't and the transition from canvas to fabric is really nice and clean looking.

Since the canvas was long enough to wrap around the top section, but not the bottom section, the canvas comes up on an angle. You can see by the picture that this worked out to my advantage as when I fold it back it gives the appearance of door flaps!!

The top of the teepee was not very pleasing to the eye, so I found a scrap of fabric in the shape of a bandana and I tied this around the top. Some people glue a ribbon with a feather attached to it, hanging down from the opening. I opted out of this, since my cat thinks that every cave-like space in the home is his, and I did not want to give him any more reason to own this space ;)

With the leftover fabric I cut out out individual shapes and glued them on the back of the teepee just for added effect.

And there you have it!!! A teepee built for a Max :) :) I was cliche and bought the $16 faux sheepskin rug that everybody buys from Ikea for their teepee. I couldn't help it though, it makes the space soooo cozy :) I then grabbed one of the million baskets we have in the house and loaded it up with some of Max's favourite books, and a sock puppet for some extra teepee giggles.

This project looks challenging, but I promise it isn't. From start to end it only took about 1.5 hours, and the beauty of it is there is not one specific way to make it. So have fun with it and make it your own! 

As an extra, these are Max's favourite books.

He loves to empty the box and then flip through each one. I had to crease all of of the books since they are small for his hands. This way he can flip the pages easier. His favourite is the 'S' book because it has a snowman on the last page, and for some reason snowmen make this kid grin from ear to ear. It's pretty adorable. He is also in love with 'Pajama Time' by Sandra Boynton, and 'Tickle' by Leslie Patricelli . She also has the Christmas book 'Fa la la' which he loved flipping through during the holidays. I think it is because he relates to the main character in those books ;)

Girl's Christmas

Every year a friend of mine hosts the most fabulous get together for a group of  girls that includes friends and her sister-in-laws. I have been lucky enough to be included in this festive party for the past three years, and over the years we have all become friends. It is a lovely group of women. Not only does everyone bring a yummy snack, but we have an gift exchange that is the mother of all exchanges. Seriously. We look forward to this night all year. Well, I know I do :) The theme is "my favourite things," and each girl gifts nine of their favourite thing... one for each girl. It is so fun and you really get a mix of different gifts because we all have different tastes and hobbies. 

So, if you have a group of girlfriends, no matter the size, you should really consider adding this to your holiday get together. And if I haven't sold this idea enough, here are the nine gifts I received at this year's party.

From the tea lover- her favourite blend and an adorable mesh ball infuser.

From the health foodie gal and the wine lover friend- a cliff bar and a wine cork with a pump to keep that unused wine fresh!

From the girl whose mother is an amazing crocheter... the most adorable headband, with a gloss to match.

From the frequent traveller- an adorable bag of mini toiletries.

From the girl who loves baths- a relaxation kit including bath salts, body wash, a luffa, and of course chocolate.

From the mountain lover- a special ornament for our Christmas tree

From the latte lover- a $5 gift card to a local coffee shop and a gloss to re-apply after drinking the latte.

From the girl with a sweet tooth- a chocolate snack.

I have a  thing for cupcakes and muffins, and so this year I gave everyone a cupcake/muffin holder to make travelling with your treat easier. I also made personalized jewellery trays for each girl. For those of you who want to try this, I used a box of clay from Hobby Lobby. I rolled small amounts of clay into a ball and then rolled it out with a rolling pin. I then used a circle cookie cutter to get my shape. I used letter stamps to personalize each tray, and before baking them in the oven I turned up the edges to give each one a unique shape. Super easy :)

Christmas mash up

I haven't made a post for a couple of weeks .. Life has gotten in the way as usual and I have had so many little things going on and a lot on my mind. I have been busy preparing for Christmas, baking, making decorations for Max's first birthday, starting the transition from Max into daycare (and trying to mentally and emotionally deal with that), putting together Max's first year photo book (which is taking forever because of the slower than molasses download speed on my computer for the shutter fly website), helping put together games for one of my best friend's baby shower, working, and trying to do as many fun things as I can with Max before I return to work in six weeks. There just aren't enough hours in the day. Life is good though and I can't complain we are happy, healthy and fortunate in many ways. My husband and I can't believe how big Max is getting and the new "tricks" as I like to call them ;) that he is learning, but at the same time.. how in the world is he almost one year old!! (insert bawling).

So this post very much mimics my mind right now.. A complete mash up! 

As promised I'm sharing with you series of holiday gift tags that I made this year. They were super easy and fun to make. The buttons, felt and scrapbooking paper are all from the dollar store and the gift tags and red/white striped string are from Hobby lobby. I know you can buy a sheet of gift tags from the dollar store but to me nothing beats something handmade with love... and if you complete a project like this while watching a show that you PVR'd from two weeks ago you can kill two birds with one stone.. multitasking is definitely a best friend of mine. I have also been playing around with brown paper wrapping paper and greenery.

 Need a cute idea for a personalized present for your loved ones? A few years ago I made a set of these for a friend of mine. You can buy a package of tiles from home depot to make two sets of four. I used a stencil and black paint. I would use a black sharpie if I make these again in the future. I did the first initial of their four family members. I then slapped a piece of sticky felt on the bottom to protect the surface they placed them on.

I LOVE these wreaths. They were not the most fun to make but the end result was totally worth it. All you need is a wire hanger and a ton of balls. Choose a friend's favourite colour, or choose a colour that matches the recipient's Christmas tree decor (like the blue one I made). All you do is thread the balls on and shake them down. They will fall into place for you. It also wasn't the cheapest to make.. the red wreath was $20... because you need a ton of balls. 

I'm also including pictures from past season's projects, my popsicle snowflake and my and Christmas bulb door decoration.. Oldies but still goodies!

 

 My final share is two pieces of art work made by a very cute baby. Have you ever tried tape resist art work? It was fun to do with him. And of course, what would the art work be without a button and hand made yarn pom pom as accents  :)

 Next week a friend of mine are getting together for a craft date to make wreaths and trees out of coffee filters. These ideas have been floating around on Pinterest lately and so I thought I'd try to make a couple for next year's mantle which I'm hoping to make more elaborate, since hopefully by then Max understands the words "don't touch" :)

Okay. Get ready for this simple sharpie coil doormat project... I giggle inside every time I see it on my phone. Again it's the little things that you add to your day to keep you sane. Or is it insane that I'm obsessed with a doormat!? I'll let you be the judge. I am still on the hunt for a plain mat to make this. Most of them already have print or design on them. But I will preserve. It may have to be added to next year's decorations. I plan on putting Merry Christmas instead of the keep the change line.

I am still hopeful that I will have a teepee made for Max by Christmas. If I do I will post the process. I will also be posting my paint job on Max's new ikea LATT table and chairs; his present from Santa.

Oh and Saturday Max meets Santa. I'll let you know how it goes. My husband and I have a $5 bet going.. my odds are on him losing his bananas. We will see.

Tried, Tested and True!

This week I was feeling ambitious and decided to try a few new recipes, all which turned out great and received the official "yeah you can make that again" from my husband. 

I love sweet potatoes and  I am always trying to find different ways to prepare them. This recipe was more like a dessert then a side, it literally melts in your mouth. Next year I am hosting Thanksgiving for my family, and while they are a pretty traditional bunch I think i am going to try to throw a curve ball at them ;)

These oatmeal chocolate chip cookies were sooo yummy. They did not last very long. I baked about two minutes more then the suggested time since they didn't seem quite ready at the suggested 11 min mark.

This recipe was so satisfying, and it made a ton. It gave us enough to have dinner, both of us to have lunch the following day and I was able to freeze a large bowl for Max and I to share some night with Kirk works late. I put three chicken breasts in the crockpot. The end result was very thick because there was so much chicken in it, but my husband tends to comment on the quantity of meat in my dishes so I loaded up on this one.

Tonight I tried this salad. It is more a summer/fall salad but I was craving something like this, and I needed a side to go with the tilapia main dish. Since it was just the two us us eating the salad, I should have cut the dressing recipe in half. No use using pricey ingredients like honey when you don't need too. This was actually my first time making my own dressing. It was really good and fairly mild too which I like in a vinaigrette.

It has been a busy week at our house. It's days like today I wish there was 30 hours in the day.. or at least an extra two hours after Max goes to bed where I still feel awake enough to get things done. I am looking forward to the weekend. We are trimming our tree and going to the mall to browse, which honestly I have only done twice since Max was born last January. So I am e.x.c.i.t.e.d. 

... and because this would be a boring post without pictures, a little eye candy for you.. our holiday mantle and the cutest little pup modelling his festive sweater :)

Christmasey Nursery!

It's Friday morning. I drove to town early this morning during Max's nap so we could make the story time at our local library. I am sitting in the parking lot of one of our city's parks. I am listening to Taylor Swift (the Wonderland track to be exact), drinking a mocha (I highly recommend the new dark hot chocolate from Tims) and listening to the sweet sounds of my snoring baby in the backseat. Life is good and I can't complain, even though I have a crappy cold.

Now that I am working two days a week I am trying to make the most of my days off with Max and expose him to new environments where there's other children, knowing that in two and a half months from now he will be going to daycare three days a week. I know it will be good for him, but it still makes me sad to think about. Max is 10.5 months old now and his personality is really starting to shine. He is an observer when he's in a new environment. He likes to sit back and take it all in and he sometimes get upset when other babies make loud noises or if they get in his space too much. He has been getting a lot better with this in the past couple of weeks. He is a sweet and funny little boy and he loves to be at home in his own space.

His own space.. our home. I'm sure many of you will agree with me when I say that our home is our sanctuary. It contains items that hold valuable meaning from our childhoods, memories new and old , and it is where my family lives... the most important thing to me in the world. For years before I had Max I was obsessed with nurseries, wondering what my baby's nursery would end up looking like. I knew this space would be so important to me. Some people don't make much use of their nursery, some don't even have a nursery, but for me I knew we would spend a lot of time in that room and make memories together. I'll never forget the day we brought Max home from the hospital and I fed him and his nursery for the first time. As I rocked him in the rocking chair that belonged to my great aunt who means the world to me, I looked over at our maternity pictures that I had hung on the wall and I couldn't help but start crying. As I looked down at Max  I came to the realization that the baby boy who I had fell in love with the moment I set eyes on was the same baby I had carried inside of me for 41 weeks. I remember looking down at him and saying with surprise "oh my gosh that was you in there." It was the unreal feeling I had ever experienced.

I have gotten a little side tracked. Apparently T.S. and am caffeine makes me nostalgic. My point being that a nursery can be a very special place for a family. Everyone who knows me knows that love decorating for the holidays and Max's nursery is no exception. So, today I share with you some quick and easy ideas to make your nursery festive.. and let's be honest some of these things are not for Max, they are for me. We spend a lot of time in his nursery and seeing decorations in his room make me happy.

Every season I have hung something new from the mirror that hangs above the change table. In the summer we had a string of cocktail umbrellas (I know so appropriate right!?) In the fall we had a string of fall leaves, and yesterday I hung up a string of Christmas light bulbs. Max loves looking up at them during diaper changes and banging them against the mirror when he's getting dressed.

 

I found a package of monogrammed stockings at our local dollar tree and I scattered them throughout the room.

Window gels are cheap and fun for older babies to squish with their fingers. WARNING extreme supervision is required with these. The little letter "I" went missing from our trick or treat window sticker. It could have easily been thrown away by accident, and it has yet to come out from a specific end... but nonetheless every time he has a coughing spell I shutter and think "it's the letter I!" Hence why this one is up high.

We read a ton of books every day and so Christmastime gave me an excuse to buy more books for my babe. We like board books, books with flaps and touch and feel books. My white shelves from IKEA and they are very sturdy. Max will use them to stand and pull on them hard and they aren't going anywhere.

If you follow me on Instagram you will be in for a treat on Dec. 1st. The nursery will be sporting a mini Christmas Tree. It is taking everything in me not to put it up three weeks ago. If you don't follow me send a request! My Instagram is Kimmieflo. 

In the next couple of weeks I will be blogging about our attempt at making a teepee for Max. This is going to be one of his gifts from Santa. Wish us luck.. we will need it.

Traditions

I came across an article some time ago that spoke about family traditions.The article spoke about how tradition teaches children what makes their family special and unique. The article went on to say that when life gets in the way and changes inevitably occur, traditions stay the same and offer stability and comfort. I fully believe in this.

Growing up we had one television, located in the basement. Mealtime was always in our dining room on the main floor, so unless we were having a snack we never ate in front of the television except on special occasions. Every December when the Toronto Santa Claus parade was on TV we would get to eat our dinner on TV tables in the basement. I cannot tell you how exciting and special that Sunday was to me every "oh my gosh we don't own any TV tables!!!" TV tables are now officially 'on my radar' ;) 

Another special tradition we had was hanging are 'name bulbs' on the Christmas tree. The bulbs came from the Christmas store Bronners in Frankenmuth. My in-laws were there this past summer and picked up a special bulb for our tree this year. I can't wait to hang it. 

Since Max is still pretty little some of the traditions I hope to have, will have to wait for another year... like Elf on the Shelf, decorating Christmas cookies and decorating the tree while listening to the Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas record (ALVIN!!!!!!) to name a few, but I do have a few ideas up my sleeve for this year. 

Festive cookie cutters are everywhere you look now. I picked up a snowman for under a dollar to use to stamp his toast.

Giving back to our community and neighbors is something that I want to instill in our children. I plan on making a trip to the Humane Society with Max in December. Since he loves his kitty and doggy I think this is fitting. 

There are so many great ideas on Pinterest for fun and simple gifts. Max and I are going to make Clementine wreaths for our neighbors this year and deliver them in the wagon. I'm sure he will thoroughly enjoy playing with the noisy cellophane. 

When I was little my Dad's work put on a Christmas party for the families. You know the Voortman holiday cookies.. the ones that dye your mouth red or green and sprinkle balls go flying everywhere when you bite into them!? They always had them there. Funny how you remember small details like that. I am hoping to take Max to both parties our workplaces are putting on this year.. and of course he already has festive shirts to wear to both :)

Visiting Santa Claus. I used to think putting a baby on a strange man's lap  was somewhat cruel.. I mean ... you can barely see his face!! I don't think Max is going to do well with his given his temperament. But I can't help myself. I'll say sorry to him in advance ;) At least he won't have to face it alone. My girlfriend has a baby girl who was born the day before Max. They will be visiting that weekend so we decided it would be the most entertaining thing to do together.

On my radar!

Today I am sharing some inspiration for the upcoming holiday season, along with a couple of fun things I am currently loving and dreaming of.

 

1)     I LOVE barn board. My brother and sister-in-law have a shed in their backyard full of loose pieces. Next spring they are transforming the shed into a play house.. so guess who will be coming into some B.B… that’s right. Oh the possibilities!!! I have a vision of a sign for our downstairs bathroom that names the past streets we have lived on, as well as the street names of our immediate family. I saw something similar at Winners years ago and it has stuck with me.

  

2)      I feel as though birch and barn board go hand in hand. I found these fun ornaments that involves two of my favourite things.. birch and stamps. For the past two years I have had this arrangement in my living room for the holidays and will be bringing it back in the next couple of weeks.

3)      Buttons, buttons, buttons! I am loving everything buttons right now. Currently I am working on a series of Christmas tags. Holly, snowmen, Christmas balls, trees and wreaths. They are absolutely adorable and I cannot wait to attach them to my loved one’s gifts this year :) Stay tuned for a post on this easy and adorable craft.

 

4)      Number balloons- these are so fun. I am starting to dream up Max’s first birthday party. The theme will be “How Time Flies” and it will involve lots of red and navy and airplanes. These balloons would look great beside his highchair and the entrance of the room.

5)      T.S. 1989- I like to turn my music up l.o.u.d. when I’m in the car by myself. I don’t think I have ever been drawn in by an entire CD. So far it’s 1-8 for me and the list continues to grow. She has out done herself.

6)      Birdcage umbrellas- this has made my Christmas list this year. I think these are so adorable. I envision walking down the streets of England when I think about carrying one of these. Too cute.
